The Interesting tidbit: The garbage trucks in Taiwan play songs that sound just like our ice cream trucks.
Our morning was spent swinging through the bottom of Taiwan, moving from the east to west coast. We celebrated making it to the other side after our three-hour drive by dining in a fancy vegan restaurant.
Next we explored Kaohsiung.
The entire country is celebrating one of its three major festivals, Double Fifth Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival. It's a long weekend and everyone was out in force to celebrate. The entire city has a festive vibe and there are special events everywhere.
We braved the heat (who knew calves could sweat so much) to check out the Lotus Pond and some of the remarkable temples. While there, we spent an inordinate amount of time watching water skiers using a tow lift to ski and practice jumps, all without a boat. I know, it's hard to explain.
Next we explored the city's new architecture from a boat on Love River, including the amazing music center and swing bridge (it rotates 90 degrees to let boats pass).
Our timing was perfect to catch a few actual dragon boat races. We loved being spectators, but found it odd that no one cheers anyone on out loud.
We checked out Pier 2's art scene, grabbed dinner and made it an early night. The heat combined with the sensory overload of being in Taiwan is catching up to us!
P.S. We are flabbergasted about people and their pets. They put them in strollers and take them everywhere. Dogs and cats! We even ate in a restaurant where a dog stayed in a backpack the entire time. When they were done eating, a woman just put on the backpack and headed out.
